DANBURY, CT-Freshman forward Hannah Millea (Sutton, MA/Sutton HS) broke a scoreless tie when she scored in the 77th minute and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team finally beat host Western Connecticut State, 1-0, in a Little East Conference match at the Westside Athletic Complex Saturday.
Millea took a through pass from junior forward Tori Pierce (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS) and fired home a shot at 76:22 to give the Corsairs the victory.
"It was a very physical game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "We just had so much heart, and we never gave up. We were definitely the underdog, and we came out with a chip on our shoulder and played like we had something to prove. It was a good win."
The Colonials outshot the Corsairs, 11-10. Junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) made six saves for UMD, while Caitlin Avery made seven stops for WCSU. Chauvin earned her sixth shutout of the season.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 6-1-1 and 2-0-0 in LEC play with the victory, while WCSU dropped to 5-2-1 and 1-0-0 in the LEC with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Mitchell Wednesday. The Colonials will visit Clark Tuesday.
