NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior forward Tori Pierce (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS) scored three goals while sophomore forward Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and freshman forward Stephanie Babineau (Malden, MA/Matignon HS) each scored twice to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team to an 8-0 victory over visiting Mitchell in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday.
Sophomore forward Maura Goncalves (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) put the Corsairs on the board when she converted a pass from senior forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) 3:08 into the match. Pierce followed with the first of her goals seven and a half minutes later, and then Friedland scored twice in less than six minutes to stake the Corsairs to a 4-0 halftime lead.
Pierce scored goals 1:03 apart early in the second half before Babineau scored the final two goals of the match in the 59th and 74th minutes. Pierce assisted on Babineau's final goal and finished with seven points on three goals and one assist.
"It was nice to see us finish," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "It was nice to see several different people put the ball in the net. We got to play a lot of people and give our starters a rest. Steph Babineau scored her first two collegiate goals, Shelby Friedland scored her first two goals of the season, and Tori had her first collegiate hat trick. We're a young team, and we're still learning every day."
The Corsairs outshot the Mariners, 30-2. Junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) made two saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season for UMD, while junior Kaylee Woodford (Niantic, CT/Morgan School) and freshman Diamond Thomas (Hartford, CT/Capital Preparatory Magnet) combined to make 13 stops in goal for Mitchell.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-1-1 with the victory, while Mitchell dropped to 1-4 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College Saturday. The Mariners will visit Newbury Saturday.
