Women's Soccer Loses To UMass Boston, 2-1
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team fell to visiting UMass Boston, 2-1, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
The Corsairs fell in a battle of Little East unbeatens putting an end to their nine-game unbeaten streak. The Beacons opened the scoring in the 25th minute when junior forward Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth HS) converted a pass from senior defender Anna O'Donoghue (Swansea, MA/Case HS). UMD would respond seven minutes later as sophomore forward Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) found the back of the net for the third time this season off a pass from senior forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS). After Friedland's goal in the 32nd minute the two squads would remain scoreless for the remainder of the half.
The Beacons put away the game winner in the 74th minute when junior midfielder Sam Cristoforo (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS) netted her sixth goal of the season. The Corsairs pressed late with two corner kicks in the final minute, but they were unable to capitalize.
The Beacons outshot the Corsairs, 19-14. Junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) made nine saves for UMD, while sophomore Kristen Spain (Quincy, MA/Archbishop Williams) made nine saves for the Beacons.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 9-2-1 and 3-1-0 in the Little East Conference with the loss, while UMass Boston improved to 11-1-0 and 4-0-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Springfield Tuesday evening. The Beacons will host Wentworth Thursday.
