WORCESTER, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team scored a second half goal and held on to defeat host Worcester State, 1-0, in a non-conference match at Coughlin Alumni Field Wednesday evening.
Junior defender Kathleen Landers (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) scored the only goal of the game for the Corsairs at 52:44. She took a pass from junior forward Tori Pierce (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS) and chipped the ball home from five yards out
"In the first half, we had a lot of chances, but we weren't able to finish," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "Kathleen Landers took a cross at the back post and put it in very nicely, and then we held them off. They had their chances in the second half, and so did we. Everybody played well, we played solid defense, and we're peaking at the right time. It was good to get some momentum going into an important game for us Saturday."
The Lancers outshot the Corsairs, 19-9. Junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) made nine saves and earned her 11th shutout of the season for UMD, while Mia Koutoulos made four stops for WSU.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 11-3-2 with the victory, while Worcester State dropped to 7-7-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Eastern Connecticut State on Senior Day Saturday.
