KEENE, NH – Host Keene State scored twice in the first half and held off a late rally in defeating the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team, 2-1, in a Little East Conference quarter-final playoff match at the Owl Sports Complex Wednesday evening.
Kara Pavlidis put Keene State on top when she scored in the 13th minute. Beverly Cole scored the Owls' second goal in the 33rd minute to stake Keene State to a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Senior forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) put the Corsairs on the scoreboard when she scored with 4:22 to go in the second half.
:"I'm disappointed that we lost, we created chances and played well on defense," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "The early goal set us back a little, but we gave it all we had until the end. We played the best we could. As a coach, I'm proud of the team and of our accomplishments this year. We're a young team and we're going in the right direction."
The Owls outshot the Corsairs, 18-10. Junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) made seven saves for UMD, while Victoria Crenson made two stops for WSU.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 11-5-2 with the defeat, while Keene State improved to 12-8-1 with the victory. The Owls advanced to Saturday's semi-final match at UMass Boston. The action was the final competition of the season for UMass Dartmouth.
