BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Junior Nerida Montrond’s (Lynn, Mass.) goal with 5:16 remaining in the first half lifted UMass Dartmouth to a 1-1 double overtime draw with Bridgewater State in a non-league college women’s soccer match played Thursday evening at Swenson Field.
Montrond evened matters for the visiting Corsairs (2-0-1) with her first tally after dribbling in from the right side of the net, as her marker came just 2:10 after the host Bears (0-0-1) took the early advantage on junior Amelia Burke’s (Plymouth, Mass.) goal that was set up by feeds from junior Brianna Furtado (Hooksett, N.H.) and sophomore Hannah Johnson (Whitman, Mass.). That would prove to be all of the scoring in the contest, as UMass Dartmouth had three solid second half chances before Bridgewater State registered four of the five shots on net in the two extra sessions.
Sophomore Jaimee O’Brien (West Springfield, Mass.), the reigning Little East Goalkeeper of the Week, made five saves in the tie for the Corsairs, while junior Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) recorded three stops for the Bears in their season-opener. Bridgewater State held a 16-14 edge in overall shots (6-4 on goal), as each team had nine corner kicks in the contest.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Salem, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Salem State in a non-league match beginning at 1:00 pm, while Bridgewater State heads to Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to square off with MIT in a non-league clash that also begins at 1:00 pm.
