Early Second Half Strikes Lift Women's Soccer To 2-0 Victory Over Fredonia

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Junior Ella Rath (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and freshman Kaitlyn Bernier (Dartmouth, Mass.) each netted goals in the opening six-plus minutes of the second half to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 2-0 non-league college women's soccer victory over Fredonia in the season opener for both schools Friday afternoon at Cressy Field.

Bernier converted a pass from junior Nerida Montrond (Lynn, Mass.) just 33 seconds after intermission to give the host Corsairs (1-0) the only tally they would need on the day with her first collegiate marker, and Rath provided an insurance goal less than five minutes later when she lofted a feed from sophomore Breana Cordeiro (New Bedford, Mass.) from 25 yards out.  Sophomore Jaimee O'Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) took care of the rest in net for UMass Dartmouth, as she made three second half saves to record her second career shutout.

Sophomore Abbey Monahan (Warsaw, N.Y.) made seven stops in the setback for the visiting Blue Devils (0-1), as the Corsairs outshot Fredonia by an 11-6 margin overall (9-3 on goal) to present Head Coach Elise Cloutier with her first career victory.  UMass Dartmouth took six of the match's seven corner kicks in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

UMass Dartmouth heads to New Haven, Conn. on Sunday afternoon to take on Albertus Magnus in a non-league match that begins at 1:00 pm, while Fredonia travels to New London, Conn. tomorrow afternoon for a non-league clash with Coast Guard beginning at 3:00 pm.
