UMass Dartmouth senior back Kayla Loycano was named as the Little East Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in a trio of contests for the Corsairs last week.
A native of Chelmsford, Mass. and a graduate of Chelmsford High School, Loycano anchored a UMass Dartmouth defensive unit that allowed just two goals in 310 minutes of action, including a scoreless draw at Johnson & Wales on Columbus Day and a 1-1 tie at Rhode Island College last Wednesday evening. Kayla, who serves as a Corsair tri-captain, has helped her squad post five shutouts to date while also holding opponents to one or fewer goals on 11 occasions.
Loycano becomes the second UMass Dartmouth student-athlete to earn Little East Defensive Player of the Week accolades this season, as senior teammate Maddie McGee-Cochran (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) copped the honor back on September 3rd after a pair of Corsair shutout wins over Fredonia and Albertus Magnus.
Head Coach Elise Cloutier’s squad, which stands at 5-6-5 overall, enters the week holding the fifth spot in the Little East standings, as UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday, October 20th by hosting Western Connecticut in a league encounter at Cressy Field beginning at 6:30 pm EDT.
