NEWPORT, RI-The UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team scored twice within the first 25 minutes and went on to defeat host Salve Regina, 2-0, at Reynolds Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman forward Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, MA/Tri-County HS) combined with classmate Tori Pierce (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS) to put the Corsairs on top. Jonasson controlled a long throw-in from Pierce and fired home a 15-yard shot at the 15:35 mark.
Sophomore forward Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS) doubled UMass Dartmouth's lead less than eight minutes later when she headed home a chip by senior midfielder Cristal Peixoto (Dartmouth, MA/ Dartmouth HS) at 23:01.
Senior goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) helped UMD preserve their lead, making seven saves.
"We played really well, and I was really happy with the result," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Hanewich. "We put on a lot of pressure at first, we had two or three chances that we missed, and we put two away. Salve put the pressure on in the second half, but we held them off. We worked really hard, and it was a good result."
The Seahawks outshot the Corsairs, 13-12. Jessica Lane and Jacqueline McPherson combined to make three stops for Salve Regna.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-1 with the victory, while SRU dropped to 1-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Nichols Thursday.
