PROVIDENCE, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team fell to host Rhode Island College, 4-0, in the 2010 Little East Conference opener for both teams at the RIC Varsity Athletic Complex Saturday.
The Corsairs out shot the Anchorwomen 30-15. Senior goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) made four saves, while senior goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI/Middletown HS) tallied nine for Rhode Island College.
The Anchorwomen put the first point on the scoreboard early in the first half. Junior forward Ashley Choiniere (Hope, RI/Scituate HS) fired a throw in at Braga, which deflected off her hands and fell in front of the goal where sophomore midfielder Libby Lazar (Wakefield, RI/South Kingston HS) was waiting. Lazar kicked the ball into the open right side of the goal, giving the Anchorwomen an early 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, Rhode Island College converted on a corner kick opportunity. Freshmen midfielder Mariah Gonzalez (Harrisville, RI/Burrillville HS) delivered a corner kick to the front of the net and freshmen Jessica Graham (Wakefield, Ri/South Kingston HS) headed the ball inside the right post, increasing the Anchorwomen lead to 2-0 going into halftime.
With 29:16 left in the game, the Anchorwomen continued their scoring effort. After a throw in by Choiniere, Graham headed the ball over to Lazar, who delivered her own header into the back of the net, making it 3-0. The Anchorwomen notched their final score when Graham drove a long, arcing into the right side of the goal, locking up the 4-0 victory for Rhode Island College.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-4-0 and 0-1-0 in the LEC with the defeat, while RIC improved to 4-0-0 and 1-0-0 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Connecticut College Tuesday evening. UMASS DARTMOUTH SOCCER
