BOSTON, MA-Junior forward Tina Gillen (Carver, MA) netted the game-winning goal and added an assist to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team over visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 2-1, today in a Little East Conference match at the Clark Athletic Center Field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons increase their school-record win streak to five straight matches to improve to 6-2-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in LEC play, while the Corsairs fall to 4-5-0 and 1-1-0.
Gillen took a cross from the corner from junior midfielder Kimberly Campbell (East Bridgewater, MA) and connected on a one-timer off the UMass Dartmouth keeper's hands for her second goal of the season at 22:42 of the first half to give the Beacons a 2-0 lead. The Corsairs cut the deficit in half, less than 10 minutes later, when freshman forward Jamie Ledin (Bridgewater, MA/West Bridgewater HS) came off the bench to score on a shot from the left corner of the box. Ledin's tally deflected of the hands of the UMass Boston keeper, to make it 2-1 at 32:37 of the opening half.
The Beacons broke into the scoring column first when Gillen blasted a shot on net that was saved from 11 yards out, but senior midfielder Kristi Morales (San Francisco, CA) collected the rebound and found the back of the net from the six-yard box at the 9:09 mark of the first half.
UMass Boston owned a 14-7 shot advantage as junior keeper Michelle Cain (Essex, MA) improved her record to 3-0-0 for the Beacons with four saves, while freshman Jen Warren (Somerset, MA/Bishop Feehan HS) stopped seven shots for UMass Dartmouth. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Fitchburg State Tuesday evening. UMass Boston will be in action again when they travel to Worcester, MA on Tuesday, September 29 to take on Becker College at 3:30 p.m.
