PLYMOUTH, NH-Sophomore forward Kate Doherty (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury HS) picked up a loose ball in front of the net and scored in the 69th minute to lift the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over host Plymouth State in a Little East Conference match at Panther Field Friday.
Doherty's goal broke a 2-2 tie and allowed the Corsairs to come from behind to win. Doherty assisted on the tying goal, which was scored by freshman forward Jamie Ledin (Bridgewater, MA/West Bridgewater HS) when she put Doherty's cross into an open net in the 53rd minute.
Freshman midfielder Shannon Rhinehart (Randolph, MA/Randolph HS) put UMass Dartmouth on top when her shot went off the goal post and into the net in the 13th minute. Sarah Pandiscio tied the score for the Panthers when she converted off a corner kick in the 19th minute. Rebecca Wilson's goal a minute and 46 seconds later out Plymouth State ahead, 2-1.
PSU out shot UMD, 12-10. Freshman goalkeeper Jen Warren (Somerset, MA/Bishop Feehan HS), who played the second half, made three saves for the Corsairs. Junior goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) made one save in the first half. Stephanie Regina and Angela LaBroad combined to make five stops for the Panthers.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-7-1 and 2-3-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while PSU dropped to 5-6-2 and 1-4-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Emerson Tuesday.
