NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Sophomore midfielder Sarah Rafferty Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) scored in the 79th minute to give visiting Worcester State a 1-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday afternoon.
Rafferty took a pass from junior midfielder Kara Rogato (North Andover, MA/North Andover HS), moved in against Corsair freshman goalkeeper Jen Warren (Somerset, MA/Bishop Feehan HS), and scored the only goal of the match with 11:11 remaining.
"It was frustrating, because we played an individual game rather than a team game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Carla DeSantis. "We didn't play together overall."
Prior to the match, four UMass Dartmouth seniors were honored. Defender Kelsey Boothby (Holbrook, MA/Holbrook HS) and midfielders Caitlin McCleary (Quincy, MA/North Quincy HS), Karla Ellis (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) and Ashley Nolan (Winthrop, MA/Winthrop HS) were recognized.
"It's unfortunate that we didn't pull out another win on Senior Day," said DeSantis. "They've all improved during my two years here in terms of their attitude, their commitment, and their dedication to the program. I wish we had them all back for another year, because we're making strides as a program, and they're going to be tough shoes to fill."
UMD out shot WSC, 15-12. Warren and junior goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) each played a half and combined to make five saves for the Corsairs, while junior Rachel Armenti (West Boylston, MA/Holy Name HS) made eight saves for the Lancers.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 6-10-1 with the defeat, while Worcester State improved to 8-5-3 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State Saturday in the final home match of the regular season. The Lancers will host Salem State Saturday.
