Junior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Western Connecticut State had 31 hits, including six home runs, and swept a Little East Conference doubleheader from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team, 13-0 and 9-2 Monday at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex. The first game ended after five innings because of the eight-run rule.
The Corsairs scored their only runs of the twin bill in the last of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and an error.
The Colonials scored three runs in each of the first three innings of the opener. Senior designated hitter Anna Levesque (Waterford, CT/Waterford HS) homered in the third and senior catcher Meghan Mammone (Stamford, CT/Stamford HS) hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Senior third baseman Amy Hartman (Ellington, CT/Ellington HS) drove in four runs for WCSU. Junior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS), freshman pitcher Julia Greenwood (Westport, MA/Westport HS) and junior catcher Diane Barry (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) got UMD's only hits off winning pitcher Magen Dargon (Jr. Trumbull, CT/Trumbull HS), who improved to 12-3. Eldridge took the loss and fell to 8-14.
Junior shortstop Danielle Basciano (Holmes, NY/Carmel HS) homered twice for the Colonials in the nightcap, while senior left fielder Luigina Facchini (Norwich, CT/Norwich Free Academy) and junior first baseman Samantha Avery (Rocky Hill, CT/Rocky Hill HS) each homered once. Hogan had a single and a double for the Corsairs. Freshman Stephanie Moss (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield HS) earned the win and improved to 7-2. Eldridge took the loss and dropped to 8-15.
UMass Dartmouth is now 9-20 and 1-9 in the Little East Conference, while Western Connecticut State is now 20-7 and 5-3 in LEC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference doubleheader Wednesday. The Colonials will host Eastern Connecticut Tuesday
