Softball Defeated Twice in Florida
CAPE CORAL, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team dropped their softball doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic Thursday, losing to the University of New England, 8-2, and St. Olaf, 5-1, at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
Senior right hander Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Massasoit CC), who relieved starter Brittany Eldridge (Sr. Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) at the start of the fourth inning, drove in one of the two UMD runs in the opener with a fourth-inning RBI single. Sophomore shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural HS) and senior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS) each had a hit for the Corsairs in the opener. After falling behind in the first, UMass Dartmouth tied it in the second, fell behind when the Nor'Easters scored three in the third and scored in the fourth before UNE put it away with four in the seventh.
In the nightcap, junior infielder Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) drove in the Corsairs' run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the fourth. Freshman center fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) had two hits for UMD, while Pontes and freshman outfielder Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) each had one. Freshman right fielder Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI/Chariho HS) started on the mound, and left in the second inning after yielding five runs in one inning of work. Kenyon relieved and finished the game, allowing three hits in five scoreless innings and striking out six.
"We kept battling back, and we had runners on base in both games, but we couldn't come up with the big hit," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin.
UMass Dartmouth is now 1-7, while UNE is 6-4 and St. Olaf is 7-4. The Corsairs will conclude their spring trip when they play Amherst and Hendrix Friday.
