Softball Ends Spring Trip, Downed by Amherst and Hendrix
FORT MYERS, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team concluded their spring trip when they lost a doubleheader to Amherst and Hendrix at the Gene Cusic Classic Friday. The Corsairs lost to Amherst, 5-1, and fell to Hendrix, 3-1, at the Lee County Sports Complex.
Freshman center fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) had three hits in as many at bats for UMD, senior catcher Diane Barry (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) contributed a hit, and junior third baseman Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) drove in the Corsairs' run with a first inning fielder's choice.
Senior right hander Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Massasoit CC) started and took the loss, yielding five hits and four unearned runs in three innings before senior right-hander Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) finished up.
Eldridge had a pair of hits in the nightcap, while freshman outfielder Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS), sophomore shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural HS), freshman right fielder Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI/Chariho HS) and Kenyon each had a hit. Kenyon drove in UMD's run in the second inning with a double, and she also started and pitched the first five innings, allowing all three runs and taking the loss before Felaccio came in for the sixth.
"Even though we lost, the performances were encouraging," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "We did some things well, but we just couldn't capitalize on all of our opportunities."
UMass Dartmouth is now 1-9, while Amherst is 12-0 and Hendrix is 9-7. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Massachusetts Maritime for a doubleheader Tuesday.
