Softball Rallies in Extras to Split with Keene State
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA – Junior infielder Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech.) delivered a dramatic two-run double to the left-center field fence with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team down to its final strike to pull the home squad back even with visiting Keene State, 7-7, in the bottom of the eighth inning of the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon. Sophomore infielder Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) then plated Pontes with a two-out, two-strike double of her own as the Corsairs rallied for the 8-7 walkoff victory to split the twin bill. The Owls took the first game 1-0.
The opener was dominated by Owls pitcher Mariah Crisp (Greenland, NH/Portsmouth) as she struck out 15 in a complete game two-hitter. The freshman faced only two batters over the minimum in moving her record to 6-2.
Freshman pitcher Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA/Case) was the tough luck loser for the Corsairs, allowing one run on six hits while striking out four and walking two.
Anna Glassman (East Gransby, CT/East Gransby) delivered the decisive blow for Keene State in the top of the seventh, smacking a double to left field to plate the game's only run. Sarah Bracken (Windham, NH/Salem) went 2-for-3 to lead KSC at the plate, while Nicole Dupuis (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg) and Ellissa Coburn (Claremont, NH/Stevens) each had a double.
Pontes and sophomore outfielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton) picked up UMD's two hits.
The nightcap saw the home squad rally from deficits of 1-0 and 4-1 in regulation before coming back from a 7-5 hole in the extra frame to get the win. Orton (3-6) picked up the victory in relief for the Corsairs, coming in to record the final out of the top of the eighth.
Pontes paced UMass Dartmouth in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with the double, a game-high three RBI and two runs scored. Gregoire added two doubles and an RBI on the game-winning hit. Rachel Carey (Holbrook, MA/Cardinal Spellman) and Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield) each had two-baggers of their own for UMD.
Molly Dussault (Weare, NH/John Stark Regional) went 2-for-3 with a RBI double, two runs scored and a walk to lead the Owls' game two effort.
The Corsairs return to action when they host Johnson & Wales Tuesday. The Owls will host Williams Wednesday.
