NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA – Junior pitcher Taylor Gardner (Orangeburg, NY/Mercy College) allowed five hits in 9 2/3 inning of work, earning a win and a save as visiting Johnson & Wales swept the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team in a non-conference doubleheader at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats won the opener, 2-1, and the nightcap, 6-0.
In the opener, junior Taylor Cwalinski (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty HS) combined with Gardner to pitch a seven-hitter, outdueling Corsair freshman right-hander Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA/Case HS).
JWU jumped on top by scoring twice in the top of the first. Freshman shortstop Cynthia Proby (Bremerton, WA/Central Kitsap HS) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on a double by freshman catcher Kristen Solari (Old Bridge, NJ/St. John Vienney HS). One out later, freshman first baseman Jessica George (Andover, NH/Proctor Academy) singled to score Solari.
The Corsairs got a run back in the fifth. Sophomore second baseman Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) led off with a double, and sophomore right fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) doubled her home. Orton walked, Gardner relieved Cwalinski, and a subsequent wild pitch moved runners to second and third but Gardner retired the side before UMD could score again. Cwalinski earned the victory to improve to 7-6, Gardner earned her first save of the season, and Orton took the loss and dropped to 3-7.
In the nightcap, Gardner tripled home two runs in a four-run fourth for JWU and subsequently scored on a passed ball, and freshman designated hitter Ivelisse Morales (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) singled home the fourth run. The Wildcats added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. Gardner improved to 8-6 with the win, while UMD freshman starter Amanda McHugh (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown HS) took the loss and dropped to 3-5. Kenyon, junior shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS) and senior first baseman Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) each had two hits in the doubleheader for the Corsairs.
UMass Dartmouth is now 9-15, while Johnson & Wales is now 15-13. The Corsairs return to action when they visit Curry Thursday. The Wildcats will host Anna Maria Friday.
