NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) was named the Little East Conference Softball Rookie of the Week this afternoon by the conference office for her performance during the Corsairs' Spring Break trip to Fort Myers, Fla.
The Little East announced its first weekly award winners on Monday, March 24 for the games played between Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 23. Eastern Connecticut State University sophomore Alyssa Hancock (Waterford, Conn.) was named the Player of the Week and Keene State sophomore Mariah Crisp (Greenland, N.H.) was chosen as the Pitcher of the Week.
Spinuzzi made an immediate impact in the UMass Dartmouth lineup, leading the Corsairs in batting average (.529), doubles (6), and RBI (10). The Fair Lawn, N.J. product registered six extra-base hits to post a .706 slugging percentage. In 10 games, Spinuzzi recorded multiple base hits eight times, including two three-hit performances. She went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI in UMass Dartmouth's victory over Knox College (Ill.). Spinuzzi also tallied three hits and drove in two runs against Saint Joseph's (Maine).
Spinuzzi also made four appearances in the pitching circle, including two starts. She posted an individual record of 1-1 and a 1.75 earned run average in 20 innings of work. Spinuzzi allowed five earned runs on 15 hits and 14 walks. She fanned a total of 22 batters to average 7.70 strikeouts per game. Spinuzzi collected her first collegiate victory against Clarkson, when she held the Golden Knights to two runs on four hits. She matched her season-high with eight strikeouts over the course of six strong innings.
UMass Dartmouth (3-7) will open its Little East Conference schedule at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, when the Corsairs host the University of Southern Maine (2-8).
