Softball Shuts Out Staten Island, Suffolk For Sixth Sunshine State Victories

KISSIMMEE, Fla. --  Sophomore Kylie Fletcher (Dighton, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in three runs to lead the UMass Dartmouth softball team to a pair of non-league victories at the PFX Spring Games on Thursday afternoon, as the Corsairs posted a 1-0 opening game triumph over the College of Staten Island before claiming an 11-0 five inning win over Suffolk in the nightcap.

Fletcher plated the only tally of the lid-lifter for UMass Dartmouth (6-2) on an RBI triple that came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as she collected two of the Corsairs’ five hits in the opening contest.  Freshman Anna Kerwood (Florence, Mass.) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of two-hit ball to improve to 2-1 on the spring in relief of sophomore Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.), who scattered four hits and struck out two over the first five frames.  Richards, junior Nicole McSweeney (Bridgewater, Mass.) and freshman Averi Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) added hits as well in the first game for UMass Dartmouth, which tossed back-to-back shutouts for the first time in just over a year.

Freshman Lauren Talbot (Windham, Maine) paced an 11-hit attack with three hits and two RBI in the nightcap triumph for the Corsairs, who plated four runs in the second inning and added three tallies each in the third and fourth frames.  Fletcher added a two-run triple in the second game for UMass Dartmouth, which received a two-run single off the bat of senior Maddie O’Gryzek (Norfolk, Mass.) along with two more hits from Richards.  Freshman Autumn Medeiros (Swansea, Mass.) scored a pair of runs in the nightcap for the Corsairs in support of junior Kate McDonald (Scituate, Mass.), who allowed four hits over the first three innings inside the circle to earn her first win of the season.

UMass Dartmouth continues play at the PFX Spring Games on Friday afternoon, as the Corsairs take on Kean and Husson in non-league action in Kissimmee, Fla. beginning at 11:45 am.
