FORT MYERS, FL- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team dropped a doubleheader to SUNY Brockport and Lasell at the Gene Cusic Tournament at the Lee County Sports Complex Sunday. The Corsairs fell to Brockport, 24-6 and lost to Lasell, 5-3.
In the nightcap, the Corsairs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but fell short. Freshman designated hitter Rachel Fonseca (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo Tech HS) drove in the first run with a double, freshman second baseman Bethany Berube (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) following with a run-scoring triple, and sophomore first baseman Michelle Conway (Burrillville, RI/Burrillville HS) knocked in the final run with a single. Freshman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS) got the other hit for the Corsairs, a single. Sophomore right-hander Ashley Puls (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) started for UMD and took the loss.
The Corsairs, who trailed after the first two innings in the opener, rallied to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 6-5 after three innings before Brockport scored 18 times in the final two innings, ending the game early due to the eight-run rule. Senior right-hander Amie Nickerson (Wrentham, MA/King Philip HS) started on the mound and took the loss.
"In the second game, we came back, but we weren't putting the ball in play early, and we fell behind," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kelly Roy-Sale. "We only got four hits. In the first game we came back against a good team, but then we made too many mistakes and they capitalized on them. Brockport hit the ball very well."
UMass Dartmouth is now 1-3 after the split. Brockport is 3-1, while Lasell is 1-0. The Corsairs will take Monday off and play Delaware Valley and Fredonia State Tuesday evening.
