CAPE CORAL, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against MCLA and Heidelberg on the third day of their spring trip at the Cape Coral Sports Complex Wednesday. The Corsairs lost to the Trailblazers, and then fell to Heidelberg, 9-1. . MCLA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added three more in the fourth. The Corsairs scored on a wild pitch and an error to make it 4-2, but MCLA added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. UMass Dartmouth left 12 on base in the opener.
The Corsairs scored in the first inning of the nightcap, and trailed 3-1 after five innings before Heidelberg scored eight times in their final two at bats. Junior catcher Diane Barry (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) had three hits and drove in UMD's run in the second game with an RBI single. Junior outfielder Elizabeth Mulready (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS) and junior infielder Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) each had a pair of hits in the opener. Junior Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/Fairhaven HS/Massasoit CC) started both games and took the losses, with freshman Julia Greenwood (Westport, MA/Westport HS) coming in relief in both contests.
"We didn't get the timely hits when we needed them in opener," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "Diane Barry had a great day; she played well behind the plate and hit the ball well. We are continuing to show improvement every day."
The Corsairs are now 0-6, while MCLA is 2-5 and Heidelberg is 7-1. UMD will continue their spring trip when they play the College of Wooster and Edgewood Thursday.
