March 17, 2009
FORT MYERS, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team lost to Delaware Valley and Fredonia State at the Gene Cusic Tournament at the Lee County Sports Complex Tuesday. The Corsairs fell to Delaware Valley, 9-5, and lost to Fredonia State, 8-0.
In the first game, the Aggies broke a 5-5 tie with four runs in the seventh inning. Senior shortstop Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) drove in three runs for the Corsairs, knocking in a run in the fourth with a squeeze bunt and two more with a sixth-inning single. Freshman pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) drove in a run with a single, and the fifth run scored on an error.
Ashley LaPorta pitched a no-hitter for Fredonia State in the nightcap, limiting UMass Dartmouth to a pair of base runners. Freshman catcher Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) walked in the first inning, and senior pitcher Amie Nickerson (Wrentham, MA/King Phillip HS) drew a walk in the fifth.
"In the first game, we could have come out on top, but, unfortunately, we made some mistakes," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kelly Roy-Sale. "We had two bad innings; otherwise, we played well defensively. In the second game, we weren't able to put the ball in play, and we didn't make things happen."
UMass Dartmouth fell to 1-5 after the twin bill. Delaware Valley is 4-1, while Fredonia is 4-2-1. The Corsairs will play Bowdoin and Franklin & Marshall Wednesday. UMASS DARTMOUTH SOFTBALL
