FORT MYERS, FL- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team fell to Bowdoin and Franklin & Marshall on the final day of their spring trip at the Gene Cusic Tournament at the Lee County Sports Complex Wednesday. The Corsairs lost to Bowdoin, 8-0, and then fell to Franklin & Marshall, 15-1.
Michelle Wells pitched a complete game shutout for the Polar Bears in the opener, which ended after six innings due tot he eight-run rule,. The Corsairs got singles from junior left fielder Katy Williams (Charlemont, MA/Mohawk Trail Regional HS), junior pitcher Alyssa Hosford (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS), junior third baseman Emily Surprenant (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS), and freshman first baseman Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS).
In the nightcap, Eldridge, who started on the mound, scored UMass Dartmouth's only run in the fourth inning when she singled, advanced on a wild pitch and Surprenant's sacrifice bunt, and then scored on an error. That run cut the Diplomats' lead to 2-1, but they scored 13 times in their final three at-bats to earn the victory. Eldridge, sophomore center fielder Jessica Falzone (Revere, MA/Revere HS), and freshman second baseman Beth Berube (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) each had two hits for the Corsairs.
UMass Dartmouth finished their spring trip with a 1-7 record. Bowdoin improved to 9-4, while Franklin & Marshall improved to 9-2. The Corsairs will return from Florida and begin their northern schedule when they host Fitchburg State next Tuesday.
