NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team swept visiting Massachusetts Maritime, 5-0 and 9-5, in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.
The Corsairs used an offensive first inning to propel themselves to victory in the opening game. UMD scored four times in the first inning, fueled by a double from senior outfielder Michelle Conway (Burrillville, RI/Burrillville HS). The Corsairs added one more run in the second inning and junior pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) threw seven scoreless innings, allowing only three hits with 10 strikeouts, securing the 5-0 win.
In the second game, the Buccaneers scored once in the top of the first but the Corsairs answered back with three runs during their first at-bats. Mass Maritime tied the score with two runs in the second, and again the Corsairs regained the lead, 4-3, with a run in the second. The Buccaneers took a 5-4 lead in the third behind a two-run home run by sophomore Sarah Click (Buzzards Bay, MA/Bourne HS). The Corsairs rallied back again with runs from junior Beth Berube (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and freshman Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS) in the bottom of the third, taking a 6-5 advantage. Eldridge came in relief for freshman pitcher Julie Greenwood (Westport, MA/Westport HS) and held the Bucs scoreless in the final two innings, earning her second win of the day. The Corsairs added three run in the fourth inning, resulting in the 9-5 final.
"A win is a win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "It's good to win our home opener. Overall, the team played well today. This was a good confidence builder for us and we hope to build upon this moving forward. Tomorrow, we need to come out ready to play from the get-go."
The Corsairs are now 3-7, while Mass Maritime is 0-8. UMD will return to action when they host Roger Williams in a doubleheader Thursday. Mass Maritime will host MCLA in a doubleheader Saturday.
