NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team lost to Eastern Connecticut State, 5-0 and 8-0, in a Little East Conference doubleheader Tuesday at UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex. The Warriors were considered the home team, because the twin bill was moved to UMass Dartmouth because their home field was unavailable.
Eastern Connecticut junior pitcher Molly Rathbun (Hebron, CT/RHAM HS) threw a no hitter in the first game of the doubleheader. Rathbun helped her cause in the bottom of the first inning with a home run, giving ECSU a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, sophomore outfielder Danielle Bourne (Branford, CT/Branford HS) plated two runs on a single to left field. Bourne and sophomore Arielle Cooper (Mystic, CT/Fitch Senior HS) later scored on errors by Corsairs freshman shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS), putting ECSU up to the eventual final score of 5-0. Rathbun (11-0) pitched seven innings, allowing no hits with two walks and 18 strikeouts. Corsairs junior pitcher Brittany Eldridge (7-12; Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) gave up five runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Warriors jumped out to an early lead. Freshman infielder Megan Godwin (Manchester, CT/Manchester HS) doubled then scored on a double by Rathbun. With Rathbun on second, Cooper homered to deep centerfield, giving ECSU a 3-0 lead. UMD had the bases loaded in the top of the second but failed to bring any runners home. A double by Godwin in the fourth scored junior outfielder Priscilla Alicea (Stratford, CT/Trumbull HS), making the score 4-0. Cooper scored in the bottom of the fifth on a single by senior catcher Rachael Soychak (Mahopac, NY/Lakeland HS), then was pinch run for by sophomore catcher Katie Sokolowski (Eastford, CT/Woodstock Academy HS), who scored on a wild pitch by Eldridge. The Warriors closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth after Alicea scored on a wild pitch by Corsairs junior pitcher Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/Fairhaven HS), then Rathbun came around to score on a single by Cooper, securing the 8-0 victory. Pontes had two of the Corsairs four hits in the game. Eldridge took the loss in the second game, pitching six innings and allowing six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. ECSU sophomore pitcher Christine Akcer (8-1; Milford, CT/Jonathan Law HS) allowed four hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.
"Overall, I thought we played pretty well today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "We had a couple mistakes. [Eastern Connecticut] is a ranked team and for us to hang in with them is a feat. Our offense wasn't strong enough today to pick up our defense. It was a confidence builder and a learning experience for us and I'm proud of the team for not giving up, we fought until the end in this one"
UMass Dartmouth is now 7-16 and 1-7 in the Little East Conference, while Eastern Connecticut State is now 19-3 and 8-0. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Johnson & Wales Wednesday. The Warriors will visit Trinity Thursday.
