Softball Edged by Salem State, 3-2

April 22, 2010

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Salem State scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team in the first game of their non-conference doubleheader at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday. The second game was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Vikings took the lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by junior center fielder Jess Baird (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic HS), but UMass Dartmouth came back to tie the score in their half. Junior center fielder Michelle Conway (Burrillville, RI, Burrillville HS) singles and scored on a double by sophomore pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS).

The Corsairs went ahead in the third when Conway scored on a wild pitch by sophomore pitcher Katelynn Fanning (East Boston, MA/St. Mary's HS). SSC took the lead in the fourth when freshman first baseman Lauren Garchinsky, singled, sophomore second baseman Michelle Grifoni (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS) doubled her home, and senior shortstop Katie Oram (Lynn, MA/Lynn English HS) singled.

Conway and Eldridge each finished with two hits for UMD, while Grifoni and freshman designated hitter Sarah Brown (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS) each had two hits for SSC.

"We played well defensively, we got some runs, we just came up short and left a few runners on base," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kelly Roy-Sale. "We didn't capitalize on our chances. Brittany pitched well; we just need to get over the hump. Between today's game and the first RIC game, we showed that we can play with the better teams. We just didn't produce when we needed to."

Fanning earned the win and improved to 14-3, while Eldridge lost and fell to 4-9.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 7-16, while Salem State improved to 25-5-1. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Keene State Saturday. The Vikings will visit Westfield State Saturday.
