GORHAM, ME-Host Southern Maine limited the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team to five hits and swept their Little East Conference doubleheader, 5-1 and 4-0, at the USM Softball Field Saturday.
USM scored twice in the fourth inning of the opener on an error and an RBI grounder by designated hitter Erin Swarbrick, and then added three more on a wild pitch, catcher Melissa Caiazzo's RBI single and Swarbrick's sacrifice fly. Freshman shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS), junior right fielder Elizabeth Mulready, and junior pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) got UMD's three hits, with Eldridge driving in UMass Dartmouth's run in the top of the seventh with an infield grounder. Sarah Deroche earned the win and improved to 4-14, while Eldridge took the loss and fell to 8-18.
In the nightcap, shortstop Anna Allard put Southern Maine on top in the first inning with a solo homer. Catcher Katie Davis singled in a run in the third, and Allard singled in a run and Davis drove in another with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Junior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS) and junior third baseman Tracie Calvert (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich HS) had UMD's only hits. Samantha Morse earned the win for the Huskies and improved to 2-18, while Eldridge lost and fell to 8-19.
The Corsairs are now 10-25 and 1-13 in the Little East Conference, while the Huskies are now 6-32 and 4-10 in LEC play. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Framingham State Sunday.
