Women's Swimming and Diving Earns First Win of Season
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Elms College on Saturday afternoon at the Natatorium. The lady Corsairs (1-4) earned their first victory of the 2013-14 season with a 96-174 win over Elms College, while the UMass Dartmouth men's team (2-3) lost a tough one to Elms, 143.50-126.50.
Freshman Kaya Flanagan (Fairhaven, Mass.) was the top point-getter for UMass Dartmouth with first place finishes in the 50 yard backstroke (30.21), 50 yard freestyle (26.98) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:25.82). The 200 yard medley relay team of Caissie Niles (Raynham, Mass.), Lindsay Days (Mattapoisett, Mass.), Ally McCarville (Glendale, Cali.) and Cori Spagna (Raynham, Mass.) earned 11 points with a time of 2:12.88. Days also took top times in the 50 yard breaststroke (35.87) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:18.06).
In the 1000 yard freestyle, Yulyssa Diaz (Dorchester, Mass.), Spagna and Kerryn Kane (Arlington, Mass.) took one-two-three for the Corsairs. Senior Katelyn Kidney (Lynn, Mass.) was the top finisher in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:06.91, while Niles and Cara Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass.) finished in first and second place in the 100 yard backstroke with times of 1:15.27 and 1:15.42.
Freshman Kendra Hebert (Lowell, Mass.) took home the top spot in both diving events. The recent Little East Conference Rookie Diver of the Week posted a score of 201.45 in the one meter and 181.42 in the three meter.
For the men, the 200 yard freestyle relay team comprised of Phil Lowney (Mattapoisett, Mass.), Robert Braza (Attleboro, Mass.), Ed Olean (Seekonk, Mass.) and Timothy Doucette (Middleboro, Mass.) finished with a first place time of 1:41.13. Sophomore Bryan Baranick (Assonet, Mass.) earned first place in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:56.39) and the 500 yard free style (5:20.49), while Lowney took top honors in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.91.
Senior Conor Szarek (Leominster, Mass.) posted first place totals in the one meter (161.62) and the three meter (205.27) diving events.
The women's swimming and diving team will host the Little East Conference Championships on Saturday, December 7 at 11 a.m., while the men's team travels to Colby-Sawyer College for a meet on December 6 at 4p.m. and December 7 at noon.
