Jan. 17, 2012
BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's swimming team swam well, but dropped their first meet of the spring semester, losing to host Simmons, 128-97, in a dual meet at the Holmes Sports Center Tuesday evening.
Winners for UMD included senior Kim Moore (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS), who won both the 1000 freestyle in 11:36.94 and the 500 freestyle in 5:44.39, junior Maggie Conlon (Methuen, MA/Methuen HS), who won the 200 individual medley in 2:24.24, and freshman Brooke Garvey (North Billerica, MA/Billerica HS), who won the three meter diving with 165.65 points,
The 800 meter freestyle relay team of senior Meredith Maki (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS), Conlon, sophomore Katelyn Kidney (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical HS/Bryant) and sophomore Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) finished first in 8:32.18.
"We had some great swims tonight from Kim Moore in the 1000 free and the 500 free, Maggie Conlon in the 200 individual medley, Brooke Garvey in three meter diving, and the 800 yard freestyle relay team of Meredith Maki, Conlon, Katelyn Kidney, and Morgan Cooper broke the pool record we set two years ago," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. "The team swam well for the first meet after our training trip. We did practice in the morning, and we will continue to train through the next two weeks of meets in preparation for New Englands. The next two weeks will be challenging, but the team has trained hard so far and is ahead of the times we swam at this point in the season last year.
UMass Dartmouth's women are now 2-4, while the Sharks are now 3-4. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State Saturday.
