NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's swimming team fell to visiting WPI in a dual meet at the Tripp Athletic Center Thursday evening. The men fell to the Engineers, 130-110, while the women were defeated, 126-97.
For the men, junior Matt Fahey (New Bedford, MA/Middleborough HS) won both the one-meter and three-meter diving. His three-meter score of 286.00 is a "B" cut-equivalent to a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division III Championships, which makes him eligible for an invitation. He won the one-meter competition with 241.55 points.
For the women, freshman Kim Moore (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) won the 1000 freestyle in 11:51.33 and the 500 freestyle in 5:50.09, junior Kathleen Foley (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill HS) won the 200 individual medley in 2:23.86 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.30, and the 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Brittany Dupuis (Milford, MA/Milford HS), freshman Natalie Brochu (Hopedale, MA/Hopedale HS), Moore and sophomore Lindsay Little (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) finished first in 4:05.58.
"We're excited about Matt's qualifying score," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. "As a while, the men's team swam much faster and they are looking forward to wrapping up the season at Colby-Sawyer. For the women, Kim and Kathleen had season best swims in all of their events, and we had two more swimmers qualify for the New England Championships. We will travel to Plymouth State on Saturday for a women's meet, and get ready to taper for New Englands."
The Corsair men dropped to 3-5 with the loss, while the women fell to 2-8. WPI's men improved to 3-3 and their women improved to 1-6. UMass Dartmouth's women will travel to Plymouth State Saturday, while both teams will visit Colby-Sawyer next Saturday. WPI will visit Clark next Wednesday.
