Swimmers Earn Sweep at Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's swimming teams swept their dual meet at host Bridgewater State at the Mary Jo Moriarty Pool Tuesday evening.

The women won, 109-107, while the men were victorious, 157-68.

For the women, freshman Carly Wadsworth (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill HS) won the 50 yard freestyle in 27.44, freshman Cecelia Rius (Rockville, MD/Richard Washington HS) won the one meter diving with 162.40 points, freshman Meredith Maki (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) won the 100 yard backstroke in 1:08.06, and freshman Heather Flimlin (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills HS) won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:13.25.

For the men, the team of freshman Chris Dodge (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) junior Steve Szarek (Middletown, CT/Middletown HS), junior David Adams (Tyngsboro, MA/ Tyngsboro HS) and junior Andrew Haughey (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) won the 400 yard medley relay in 4:03.03, freshman Kevin Janofsky (Brookfield. CT/Brookfield HS) won the 1000 yard freestyle in 11:57.04, freshman Jake Pesante (Wakefield, RI/South Kingston HS) won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:53.22, and the 500 yard freestyle in 5:15.59, Szarek won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:06.06, junior Joe Krzystofik (Chicopee, MA/Chicopee HS) won the 400 yard individual medley in 4:55.81, senior Matt Fahey )New Bedford, MA/Middleboro HS) won the one meter diving with a score of 221.35 and the three meter diving with a score of 215.70, David Adams won the 100 yard butterfly in 59.28, and the team of David Adams, Pesante, Dodge and Haughey won the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:35.40.

"The women's meet was a close meet, and we had to win the last individual event, the 100 breaststroke, and Heather Flimlin came through and finished first," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Cathy Motta. "We had some really good swims, and our depth carried us through. In the men's meet, we won 10 of 13 events. I was very pleased, we had several people out sick and it was definitely a team effort. Hopefully, we can get our people back healthy soon."

The Corsair women are now 1-2, while the men are 1-1. BSC's men are 1-1 and their women are 2-2.The Corsairs will return to action when they host the UMass Dartmouth Invitational next Saturday.
