SALEM, MA-Host Salem State swept all three doubles matches and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team, 9-0, in their Little East Conference match at the Salem State Tennis Courts Tuesday afternoon.
The Vikings' Michelle McEwen and Lauren Turenne defeated senior Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) and sophomore Angela Pollard at number one doubles, 8-4; Carly Muniz and Melissa Govertsen downed UMD freshman Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and junior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) at number two doubles, 8-1, and Patty Quartararo and Anna Yaskell edged sophomores Alex Post (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth North HS) and Casey Auman (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) of the Corsairs at number three doubles, 9-7.
"Salem State was the better team today, although when you can't go with your full lineup, it changes things," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Salem is one of the teams to beat in the conference, and we have to play a little better against Bridgewater tomorrow if we want to turn this around. We had a close match at third doubles, and our people played their best, but Salem State was just better today."
The Corsairs dropped to 7-3 and 4-2 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Vikings improved to 9-1 and 6-0 in the LEC with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Bridgewater State Wednesday.
