Women's Tennis Picked Second in LEC

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team has been picked to finish second the annual Little East Conference pre-season poll.

The Corsairs received 63 points in the poll, 16 points behind first-place Bridgewater State. That represents UMD's highest finish ever in the LEC pre-season poll.

The Bears received seven of the nine first-place votes. Plymouth State was third with 58 points and Salem State, which received the other two first-place votes, was fourth with 54 points. Southern Maine was fifth with 49 points, UMass Boston sixth with 37, Rhode Island College seventh with 25, Western Connecticut State eighth with 22 and Worcester State ninth with 18.

"I was surprised, I thought Salem would be second and we would be in third," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry "We have a nice nucleus returning, but we felt that Bridgewater and Salem were the two strongest teams."

The Corsairs finished 9-6 overall and 5-3 in LEC play last year, advancing to the semi-finals of the LEC Tournament. UMass Dartmouth will begin their 2012 schedule at Becker Thursday, September 6th.
