PLYMOUTH, NH-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won two of three doubles matches and went on to defeat host Plymouth State, 6-3, in the Corsairs' Little East Conference opener at the Physical Education Center Tennis Courts Saturday.
Juniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) tied the match at 1-1 when they defeated Nitsa Ioannides and Andra Dion at number two doubles, 8-4; then senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) and sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/ Chelmsford HS) put UMD ahead to stay when they downed Jane Duggan and Chelsea Thibeault at number three doubles, 8-4.
Cignoli clinched the decision when she defeated Duggan at number five singles, 6-3, 7-5.
"The scores were close, and we had to earn everything we got today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Our people fought extremely hard to get this hard earned victory. Plymouth State is a good team, and we performed well. I'm pleased with our performances all the way down the line."
The Corsairs improved to 4-0 and 1-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Plymouth State dropped to 2-3 and 1-2 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Rhode Island College Tuesday.
