NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won three close doubles matches, then swept all six singles matches in straight sets as they defeated visiting Worcester State, 9-0, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday.
For UMD, juniors Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and Casey Auman (North Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) downed sophomores Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT/Waterford HS) at number one doubles, 8-4; juniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) defeated sophomore Miranda Biron (Webster, MA/Bartlett HS) and freshman Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT/Middletown HS) at number two doubles, 8-5; and sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/ Chelmsford HS) and senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) rallied to defeat juniors Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT/Middletown HS) and Laura Sarkis (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) at number three doubles, 9-7.
The closest singles match was at number four, where Furtado defeated Michanczyk in a tie-breaker in the first set before going on to win, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
"The doubles were very exciting, it was close all the way," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Our third doubles team was down, 7-6, and they came back and won the last three games and pulled out a hard fought victory. We pretty much had our way in singles, and it was a good team victory."
The Corsairs improved to 7-0 and 4-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while WSU dropped to 4-5 and 0-4 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Southern Maine Saturday. Worcester State will visit Johnson & Wales Saturday.
