NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team fell to visiting Salem State, 5-3, in the semi-final round of the Little East Conference Tournament at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.
The Vikings took two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead going into singles. The Corsairs won at number three doubles, where sophomore Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/ Chelmsford HS) and senior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) defeated sophomore Lauren Woods (Burlington, MA/Burlington HS) and freshman Tara Garvey (Palma, MA/Palma HS), 8-3. The Vikings won at number one, where seniors Michelle McEwen (Billerica, MA/Billerica Memorial HS) and Jessica Spinale (Saugus, MA/Saugus HS) defeated juniors Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS), 8-2; and at number two, where junior Maddy Ward (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) and senior Anna Yaskell (Stockholm, Sweden) rallied from a 6-5 deficit and downed juniors Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS), 8-6.
Ward defeated Schulze at number two singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Spinale downed Pollard at number three singles, 6-4, 6-0, to put the Vikings ahead, 4-1. The Corsairs claimed the next two matches, with Cignoli defeating freshman April McDermott (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury Memorial HS) at number five, 6-0, 6-4, and at number four, where Furtado downed Yaskell, 6-3, 6-3. But SSU clinched it when Woods defeated junior Casey Auman (North Dartmouth, MA/North Dartmouth HS) at number six, 6-3, 6-2.
"It was very disappointing to lose such a close match," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "We had our backs to the wall after doubles, and we had to win four of the six singles, but we came up short by winning just two of them. It was a good season, we ended up 10-2, and the Salem State people were very gracious in winning. I thought Liz Cignoli did a good job for us, coming back from being ill to win a big match in singles."
The Corsairs dropped to 10-2 with the defeat, while SSU improved to 8-4 with the victory. Salem State will travel to Bridgewater State/ Saturday for the LEC championship match. The match was the final action of the season for UMass Dartmouth.
