UMass Dartmouth Earns No. 3 Seed In Little East Tournament

SALEM, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's tennis team wrapped up its 2013 regular-season with a 6-3 victory at Little East rival Salem State University this afternoon.

With the win, the Corsairs (9-3) clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, while forcing the Lady Vikings (3-8) to upset top-ranked Bridgewater State (11-0) on Friday afternoon to secure the sixth and final seed. UMass Dartmouth will host the No. 6 seed on Tuesday, October 22 in the first round of the 2013 Little East Women's Tennis Championship.

The Corsairs jumped out to an early advantage that they would not relinquish with a 2-1 edge in doubles. The top-flight tandem of senior Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, Mass.) and classmate Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, R.I.) posted an 8-2 victory over April McDermott and Katie Razzaboni. Senior Casey Auman (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and freshman Katelyn Capone (Abington, Mass.) followed suit by cruising to an 8-2 win over Lauren Woods and Hilary Guftason. Salem State cracked the scoring column at No. 3 doubles, when Tara Garvey and Emily Yanchun defeated the senior duo of Lindsay Butler (Newport, R.I.) and Alex Post (Plymouth, Mass.).

The visitors continued to apply the pressure in the singles competition, winning four of the six matches. Pelletier earned a straight-set victory (6-0, 6-1) over McDermott, while Pollard needed the minimum two sets (6-4, 6-2) to capture her match against Woods at second-flight singles. The Lady Vikings sandwiched a pair of victories between Post's straight-set win at No. 5 singles. Auman secured the final point for the visitors at third-flight singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Yanchun.
