Corsairs Outshine Beacons, 8-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- After three tightly-contested doubles matches, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth swept all six matches en route to an 8-1 victory over intra-state rival University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference women's tennis match Thursday afternoon on the UMD Tennis Courts.

The Corsairs improved to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference circuit, while the Beacons fell to 4-5 overall and 3-3 against Little East opponents.

UMass Dartmouth freshman Jenna Lahaie (Lakeville, Mass.) won three tie-breakers on the day, claiming wins in the first-flight singles and doubles. Lahaie teamed with senior co-captain Maggie LeBrun (Mattapoisett, Mass.) for an 9-8 (7-3) tie-breaker win at first doubles. Lahaie also beat the Beacons' No. 1, sophomore Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.) 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 10-2.

UMass Boston won its lone point at No. 2 doubles, where juniors Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) and Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) nipped sophomores Kerry Magoon (Marshfield, Mass.) and Kheyla Orival (Woburn, Mass.), 8-6, in the first completed match of the afternoon.

Corsairs senior co-captain Kristen Rose (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and sophomore Mollie McCaffrey (Taunton, Mass.) were 8-5 winners over senior Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey) and sophomore Meghan Erickson (Hubbardston, Mass.) at No. 3 doubles.

Bhoyed by the 2-1 advantage, UMass Dartmouth swept through the singles competition. Magoon defeated Smith 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2, LeBrun topped Celebi 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, Rose beat Woytowicz 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and McCaffrey stopped Erickson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5. Sophomore Samantha Rollings (Tiverton, R.I.) completed the sweep with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory over Shea at No. 6.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, when the Corsairs travel to Southern Maine (2-8, 0-6 LEC for a Little East Conference match.
