Lower Singles Flights Push Women's Tennis to 5-4 Comeback over Suffolk

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – With the match on the line, the Corsairs rallied in singles to capture the final four matches and come away with a 5-4 victory over the Suffolk Rams in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.

How it Happened

The Rams jumped out the early lead in doubles play, taking both the No. 1 and No. 2 flights before Samantha Rollings (Tiverton, R.I.) and Kheyla Orival (Woburn, Mass.) took their fourth-straight match as a duo to the tune of an 8-4 score, giving the Corsairs one opening point.

Singles started out with the momentum on Suffolk's side as the Rams extended their lead to 4-1, with the Rams claiming No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The Corsairs then began to battle back in the lower flights. Reigning LEC Rookie of the Week Jaime Fastino (Rehoboth, Mass.) picked up her fifth-straight victory at No. 3 singles, to a score of 6-2, 6-2. Rollings then wrapped up No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory, for her fourth-straight win. 

Jillian Reichert (Marion, Mass.) evened the match score up at 4-4 with her 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, and her third-straight.  The deciding point again came down to UMass Dartmouth's Molina Oung (Bourne, Mass.) and Suffolk's Chrissy Texidor (Miami, Fla.) at No. 5 singles. Oung finished the deal, taking her match 6-2, 6-3. 

Inside the Numbers

  •  With the win, the Corsairs ended their winning streak to four  while snapping the Rams' five-game streak.
  • Suffolk's No. 1 Valentina Medina (San Andres, Colombia) and  No. 2 Aidian Sagyndykova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) remain unbeaten on the year, and move to 14-0 and 13-0 on the season, respectively.
  • Since moving up to No. 5 singles, Oung is now 10-1 in five straight matches.
  • The win ends a two game skid against the Rams for the Corsairs. UMass Dartmouth 's last against Suffolk was an 8-1 decision in 2013.

Up Next

The Corsairs will wrap up regular season action on Saturday, when they host Southern Maine starting at 1 p.m. The Rams will also close out the 2016 regular season, traveling to Newton, Mass. to take on the Mustangs of Mount Ida on the same day.
