DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Four players earned wins in both singles and doubles action as UMass Dartmouth opened its home schedule with a 7-2 Little East Conference women’s tennis dual-match victory over Southern Maine Saturday afternoon on the UMD Courts.
Senior Jenna Lahaie (Lakeville, Mass.), junior Jaime Fastino (Rehoboth, Mass.), junior Monika Reining (Linsengericht, Germany) and sophomore Michelle Aftandilian (Watertown, Mass.) were all straight set winners in singles play for the host Corsairs (1-1, 1-1 LEC), while Reining and sophomore Rachel Aftandilian (Watertown, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-2 triumph at number two doubles. Michelle Aftandilian and junior Melanie Wong (Somerset, Mass.) helped UMass Dartmouth to a sweep in doubles play with a 9-8 (7-4) victory at the number three position in the lineup.
Senior Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) and junior Ashley Owens (Penn Yan, N.Y.) collected the lone points of the day in the setback for the visiting Huskies (1-1, 0-1 LEC), as Owens posted a straight set win at number four singles while Scheidegger split the first two sets at the number six singles spot before taking a 10-7 pro set triumph.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Curry in a non-league match on Monday afternoon on the UMD Courts at 3:30 pm, while Southern Maine will be idle until next Saturday, September 15th when the Huskies head to Boston to take on UMass Boston in a Little East Conference clash beginning at 1:00 pm.
