Women's Tennis Starts Flawlessly

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team did not lose a set and blanked visiting Becker, 9-0,in the 2011 season opener for both teams at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
Sophomore Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and senior Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) defeated senior Megan Nessen (Levittown, PA/Truman HS) and Laura Mimms at number one doubles, 8-5. Sophomores Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) and Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, NH/Portsmouth HS) defeated freshman Nicole Connolly (Scarborough, ME/McAuley HS) at number two doubles, 8-0, and freshman Hannah Schulze (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and junior Liz Girczyc (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) defeated seniors Lianna Woodbury (South Dennis, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) and Shauna McNally (Shrewsbury, MA/Bourne HS) at number three doubles by the same 8-0 score. Morey's singles match was the closest one, as she defeated Connolly, 7-6, 7-6, winning both sets in tie-breakers.
"Our newcomers and our returning players all played very well," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Amy Lopes. "They were consistent, and that was the key. It was good to see us play well in our opener."
The Corsairs improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Hawks dropped to 0-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Endicott Wednesday. Becker will visit Mount Ida Monday.
