GORHAM, ME-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won three of the first four singles matches and defeated host Southern Maine, 7-2, in their 2009 Little East Conference opener Saturday.
The Corsairs took two of three doubles matches, and then won three of the first four singles matches to clinch the win in the match, which was moved indoors to the USM Fieldhouse due to inclement weather. Junior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) defeated Kristine Brammer at number one singles, 6-1, 6-1, sophomore Kelsey Grossmann (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS) defeated Tegan Talbot at number three singles, 6-4, 6-1, and junior Blair Dalrymple (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS) downed Erica Robertson at number four singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, to give the Corsairs their fifth point and clinch the win.
"It was a nice win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Amy Lopes got us off to a flying start with wins in first doubles and first singles, Kelsey got us a point at third singles, and Blair came back after losing the first set to win the clinching match for us."
The Corsairs improved to 2-0 and 1-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Huskies dropped to 2-1 and 1-1 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Plymouth State next Friday.
