NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won for the fourth consecutive time, sweeping the doubles matches and defeating host UMass Boston, 8-1, in a Little East Conference match at the Boston College High School Courts Tuesday.
Senior Amy Lopes (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and junior Alexa Fiorita (Reading, MA/Reading HS) were embroiled in the toughest match of the day, picking up a service break in the final game to defeat Anitra Kloczewiak and Destanee Ringler, 9-7. Freshmen Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) and Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) defeated Brittany Engel and MaKenna Hughes at number two doubles, 8-0, and freshmen Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/ Fairhaven HS) downed Samantha Counts and Hieu Nguyen at number three, 8-3.
"We had a real dogfight at first doubles, and Amy and Alexa pulled it out at the end against a real good doubles team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "They went back and forth all afternoon. The other two doubles teams were very steady."
Lopes defeated Kloczewiak at number one singles, 6-3, 6-1, and the Corsairs swept the three through six singles matches. "Amy defeated a tough opponent at number one," said Perry. "Nicole lost in a tie-breaker at number two, and the rest of the team had an easier time. They all played extremely well. I was very pleased with our performance."
The Corsairs improved to 4-0 and 3-0 in the LEC with the victory, while the Panthers dropped to 4-3 and 0-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State Saturday.
