NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won five of the six singles matches and defeated visiting UMass Boston, 7-2 in their 2011 Little East Conference match at the Dartmouth Tennis Center Saturday. The match was moved indoors due to inclement weather.
The Corsairs and Beacons split two doubles matches, but UMass Boston only had five players. At number one doubles, sophomore Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and senior Courtney Morey(Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie their match against junior Anita Kloczewiak (Newton, MA/Newton North HS) and sophomore MaKenna Arrigo (Yarmouthport, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS), 8-8, before losing in a tie-breaker.
In singles, Pelletier defeated Kloczewiak, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4),m at number one, while Morey downed sophomore Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS), 6-1, 6-3, at number two. Sophomore Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and sophomore Allison Furtado(Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS), who had defeated junior Hieu Nguyen (Dorchester, MA/Archbishop Williams HS) and Wendy Steinman at number two doubles, 8-4, at number two doubles, also won in singles. Pollard defeated Arrigo at number three singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Furtado downed Steinman at number four doubles, 6-2, 6-3.
"It was a good, solid, team performance," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "I was very pleased with the way we played, we had very good placement of our shots."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 3-1 and 2-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while UMass Boston dropped to 2-4 and 1-1 in LEC play with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Worcester State Tuesday. The Beacons will host Western Connecticut Tuesday.
