BRIDGEWATER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team swept the doubles matches, and went on to defeat host Bridgewater State, 6-3, in a Little East Conference match at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts Saturday. The loss was the Bears' first defeat this season.
The Corsairs took a 3-0 lead after the doubles matches. At number one, senior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and junior Alexa Fiorita (Reading, MA/Reading HS) defeated Lauren Donnelly and Jessica Francis, 8-6. At number two, freshmen Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS),and Elizabeth Cignoli downed Julie Kraby and Bridget Murphy, 8-3, and at number three, freshmen Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) defeated Jenna Williamson and Lauren Hopp, 8-4.
In singles, Lopes defeated Donnelly at number one, 6-3, 6-2, Pelletier defeated Francis at number two, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, and senior Blair Dalrymple (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS) beat Kraby at four, 0-6, 7-6, 6-4.,
"We beat a very tough Bridgewater State team today, and I was very pleased with our performance," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Three singles matches went three sets, and we won two of them, and it was a very hard-fought win. We were extremely solid in doubles, and we came through when we needed to."
The Corsairs improved to 5-1 and 4-1 in the LEC with the defeat, while the Bears dropped to 9-1 and 5-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host MCLA Monday.
