NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior Alexa Fiorita (Reading, MA/Reading HS) won the deciding match at number five singles as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team edged visiting Salem State, 5-4, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.
Fiorita rallied to defeat the Vikings' junior Patty Quartararo (Lexington, MA/Lexington HS), 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, to give UMass Dartmouth a 5-3 lead with one match remaining.
UMass Dartmouth took a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition. Senior Ay Lopes (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and Fiorita defeated senior Alicia Poore (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham HS) and sophomore Michelle McEwen (Billerica, MA/Billerica Memorial HS) at number one doubles, 8-2, and freshmen Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) downed Quartararo and sophomore Anna Yaskell (Stockholm, Sweden) at number three, 8-1. SSU juniors Lauren Turenne (Reading, MA/Reading HS) and Carly Muniz (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester HS) defeated freshmen Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) at number two doubles, 8-5..
Lopes and Pollard then won their singles matches to give UMD a 4-3 lead, but Muniz and Turenne won for the Vikings to cut the margin to 4-3 before Fiorita's win clinched the verdict. "Alexa's match was very close, and the third set went back and forth," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Alexa had match point on three occasions, and she finally put it away on the third try."
The victory moves the Corsairs to half a game behind Bridgewater State and Salem State, with two matches remaining. UMD has the tie-breaker on both teams. "I'm very proud of our team," said Perry. "Everything started with the doubles, and Amy got us going in singles. Alexa came through for us under extreme pressure."
The Corsairs improved to 9-1 and 5-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Vikings dropped to 9-1 and 6-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Worcester State Friday. Salem State will host Bridgewater State Saturday.
