NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Bridgewater State swept the three doubles matches and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team, 5-0, in the Little East Conference championship match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
The Bears took the lead when freshman Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, MA/Ludlow HS) and sophomore Lauren Hopp (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) defeated freshmen Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) and Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) at number three doubles, 8-2. Sophomore Julie Kraby (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional HS) and junior Bridget Murphy (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) downed freshmen Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) and Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) at number two, 8-3, and then seniors Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, MA/Barnstable HS) and Jessica Francis (West Barnstable, MA/Barnstable HS) defeated senior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and junior Alexa Fiorita (Reading, MA/Reading HS) at number one, 8-5.
Williamson defeated Cignoli at number three singles, 6-1, 6-2, then Murphy downed Fiorita at number five singles, 6-1, 6-2, clinching the victory. In the LEC playoffs, matches are ended once a team earns five points.
"It was a disappointing ending to a great season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "We had a great run, I'm proud of our squad, and they all feel bad about the loss. Bridgewater came to play today, they deserved to win, and we wish them the best in the NCAAs. The top four teams were really close, and any one of them could have won."
The Bears improved to 14-1 with the victory, while the Corsairs dropped to 12-2 with the defeat. BSU advances to the NCAA Division III Championships next May, while the match was the final action of the season for Mass Dartmouth. UMASS DARTMOUTH TENNIS
