NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Sophomore Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's outdoor track and field team has been honored by the Little East Conference.
Chauvin was named LEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
Chauvin broke a pair of school records at last weekend's New England Division III Championships. Friday, she finished second in the discus with a school record throw of 140 feet, one inch. She broke her own school record by 14 feet. Saturday, she broke the school record in the hammer throw when she finished third with a toss of 164 feet, nine inches. She broke her own discus record by 14 feet, and the hammer record is 20 feet better than it was before Chauvin's arrival at UMD.
"Krista's award is well-deserved," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "She is having an outdoor season we could never have anticipated when she arrived here from Stonehill. Krista has shown phenomenal improvement since the start of the season. She is a very talented young woman who is throwing with a lot of confidence who is throwing very well. Currently, she is inside the group to qualify in the hammer (17th nationally) and just outside the group in the discus (23rd nationally). She scored 14 points for us last weekend, and we finished 11th, which is our highest finish in years."
The Corsairs will return to action this weekend for the Open New England Championships.
