NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team have been honored for their performances at last weekend's Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships.
Junior Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) has been named LEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, sophomore Adam Jones (Amesbury, MA/Triton Regional HS) has been chosen as LEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, and freshman Grunde Brandso (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was picked as LEC Men's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week.
Chauvin took first place in the weight throw with a throw of 52 feet, five inches that extended her own school record. In the shot put, she also placed second in the LEC and fourth in the Alliance at 37 feet, 9 ¼ inches the fourth best throw indoors at UMD. Jones tied the meet record and set a school record when he won the high jump at 6-8 1/4. Brandso was the LEC champ and the Alliance runner-up in the shot put at 47-11, the second best throw indoors at UMD.
"Adam continues to have an outstanding sophomore year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "He broke our school record and captured the Alliance championship and was almost flawless in the competition. He continues to improve and gain confidence, and it wouldn't surprise me if he jumped even higher before the year is over."
"Krista is in her first year of indoor track at UMass Dartmouth after a great outdoor season last year," Gardiner said. "She has improved each meet, and extended her school record a bit further. She's a hard worker, and her confidence grows week to week."
"Grunde has had a phenomenal rise since he joined our program at Christmas break," Gardiner said. "He's only been practicing since the beginning of January, but he has shown great improvement over the past four meets. To win the Little East championship in only the fourth meet of his collegiate career is outstanding, and we're excited about what the future holds for him."
The Corsairs will return to action at the New England Division III Championships next weekend. The men will travel to Bates, the women to Southern Maine.
